Whether you are looking to start therapy for the first time, restart therapy after some time, or change modalities of therapy, it is my goal to provide a comfortable and non-judgmental approach on this journey.
Attachment focused therapy is based on the tenets of attachment theory wherein children develop an attachment style based on the style, quality, and availability of care they receive from their caregivers. This style often creates predictable behaviours and relationship styles.
Trauma is experienced when an event overwhelms the nervous system and limits our ability to cope. In other words, when bad things happen and we cannot cope we can become traumatized. Creating an optimal plan to address experiences and symptoms of trauma help pave the path to well-being. A large part of my work involves assessing and providing the correct trauma treatment, depending on your needs. Nervous system mapping is one of the ways that helps people understand how their nervous system responds and how to gently help guide that response toward healing.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy in the treatment of PTSD . It is also utilized to treat a number of challenges related to:
-Anxiety
-Depression
-Phobias
-Grief
-Physical/Sexual Assault
-Substance abuse and addictions
-Sleep disturbances
Mindfulness-based techniques haven been an integral part of my practice as they help to foster a sense of self-compassion and non-judgment. Mindfulness has been widely researched and has demonstrated many physical, mental, and emotional benefits.
Traumatic events often have an impact on physical bodies. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy utilizes both cognitive and body-based techniques to relieve stress that is carried in the physical body as a result of trauma.
I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation to discuss your needs and determine if we are a good fit for therapy
Sarah Boyle has been working with children, adults and families since 2002. She has a Developmental Services Worker diploma, a Bachelor of Child and Youth Care, and a Master of Social Work degree.
Sarah has also trained in various forms of therapy, including Attachment-Focused Family Therapy, EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy , Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).
She is passionate about working with people across the lifespan, but has dedicated much of her education and training to working with people who have experienced trauma, people with developmental disabilities, and various marginalized populations.
She utilizes multiple modalities of treatment in order to create individualized plans to meet the needs of those she works with.
Depression and anxiety can impact all facets of life including sleep, appetite, mood, relationships, and our ability to cope. Creating a holistic plan to reduce feelings of stress can help to create and restore balance in your life.
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic events. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger after traumatic events. I am dedicated to providing supports that include understanding the science of trauma in the brain and body and practical skills and techniques to increase well-being.
Parenting can be a difficult yet rewarding journey. Sometimes we find ourselves in need of additional support to help cope with difficult circumstances that we may face as parents.
Some of the areas that I help support families in:
- navigating supports for children's mental health
- managing difficult family dynamics
- behavioural supports
- navigating the education and healthcare system
I have worked in multiple settings with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Some of the areas that I have experience in are:
-informing educational supports through IEP and IPRC planning
- classroom and home modifications for behavioural and sensory needs
- trauma prevention and treatment
-life skills and social supports
I have worked in many environments helping to support children and adults with learning disabilities. This has included support in educational, vocational, group home, family settings, and the criminal justice system.
In addition to working with individuals with learning disabilities, much of my work has been helping educate people on how to adequately support these individuals with an informed understanding of how a learning disability can impact learning, social, emotional, and behavioural functioning.
Sensory Processing involves an understanding of how our brain processes sensory information and how this can impact our nervous system. Sensory processing is a spectrum...and we are all on it. I am passionate about helping people understand how their own sensory needs can impact their mood, behaviours, ability to learn, feelings of safety, and sleep.
People living with addictions often face stigma and a multitude of barriers in their road to recovery. Many addictions are linked to earlier traumas, and require a multitude of supports to help recurring addictions.
I have experience working in harm reduction, recovery and sobriety maintenance. I use a trauma-informed approach to help create a collaborative plan in addictions recovery.
